The northern beaches

Relax on quiet pacific beaches

BASE CAMP Peru-Travel-Co

Introduction

The sleepy ex-fishing village of Mancora offers little more to do than relax on quiet golden beaches. Located in the north of the country, they benefit from all year sunshine, sandy beaches and blue seas. Our favourite hotels overlook quiet beaches, but in the town of Mancora, you can find great restaurants, cafes and lively bars. We might not be able to compete with the Carribean, but after an busy itinerary traveling high in the Andes, a beach break might be just what you want.

Things to do.

Not alot and thats the attraction! If you do want to get away from the pool, then there are a few water sports on offer in Mancora, including surf lessons, jet-skis & kite boarding. If you are in the area between late July and October, you might be able to take an excursion out  into the sea off Mancora, to observe humpback whales in the warm warmer waters close to the quator, in order to mate and give birth. Also, you can swin with tea turtles off the jetty at Ñuro, where a colony of turtles have become accustomed to human contact after years of feeding from scraps thrown out by fisherman.

Climate

With 340 days of sun a year, you are almost guranteed nice weather on the beaches of Mancora. The warmest months are from November through until April, when daytime temperatures commonly reach 35°C although sporadic evening showers can be refreshing when temperatures drop to 20°C. For the rest of the year, it is commonly 26°C during the day and around 15°C at night with cooling sea breezes in the evening.

Where to eat

There are not many independent restaurants on the beach of Pocitas, so you have to head into the small town of Mancora if you do not want to eat at the hotel. There are a few bars and restaurants on the towns beach but quality is not great. Most of the better eateries are on the main road at the southern end of town. Here are some of our favourites;

SIRENA DE JUAN is a lovely little bistro serving Peruvian and international food. It is small so you might need a reservation.

MOSCA EN LA SOPA serves latin food including pasta and some steaks

TOCUYO is a small sushi cafe.

AQUA has some great seafood.

ANTICA is a large pizza and pasta restaurant good for families.
